Colts Neck, New Jersey — The New Jersey Republican Party’s Election Integrity Task Force says it has identified hundreds of non-citizens registered on voter rolls across all 21 counties in the state, raising renewed concerns about election administration and voter registration procedures.

According to NJGOP Chairwoman Christine Giordano Hanlon, the findings emerged from a review of records obtained through public information requests submitted to county election offices in partnership with the Republican National Committee (RNC).

Hanlon described the discoveries as a significant concern for election officials and lawmakers, stating that the cases uncovered so far may represent only a portion of a larger issue.

“County-level records show that hundreds of non-citizens were placed on New Jersey’s voter rolls over the past few years,” Hanlon said. “With additional records still being reviewed, these findings may be only the beginning.”

Task Force Findings

The Election Integrity Task Force reported identifying hundreds of voter registrations belonging to individuals who were not U.S. citizens at the time of registration.

According to the review, many of the registrations appear to be linked to New Jersey’s automatic voter registration system administered through the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).

The task force also cited at least 30 documented cases in which non-citizens allegedly cast ballots in elections over a period of several years.

In many of those instances, the individuals reportedly disclosed their non-citizen status during the naturalization process and later requested removal from voter rolls. Some claimed they were registered without fully understanding the eligibility requirements.

Calls for Reform

Republican leaders say the findings demonstrate the need for additional safeguards within the voter registration process.

Among the proposals being discussed are:

  • Proof-of-citizenship requirements for voter registration.
  • Enhanced verification procedures between state agencies and election offices.
  • More frequent voter roll audits.
  • Increased oversight of automatic voter registration systems.

Supporters of these measures argue they are necessary to maintain confidence in election outcomes and ensure compliance with existing laws.

RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said the organization will continue supporting efforts to review voter rolls and strengthen election security nationwide.

Critics Dispute Broader Fraud Claims

Democratic officials and voting rights advocates have cautioned against interpreting the findings as evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Critics argue that many of the identified cases involve administrative errors, misunderstandings, or mistakes within registration systems rather than deliberate attempts to influence elections.

They also note that several individuals voluntarily disclosed their status and sought correction of their records, suggesting that safeguards within the system ultimately identified the issues.

New Jersey law prohibits non-citizens from voting in state and federal elections, and election officials maintain that multiple layers of review exist to protect election integrity.

Federal Cases Add Attention

The issue has gained additional attention following recent federal prosecutions involving non-citizens accused of illegally voting in federal elections and making false statements regarding citizenship status.

Those cases have fueled broader national discussions about election security, voter access, and the effectiveness of automatic voter registration programs.

Looking Ahead

The NJGOP Election Integrity Task Force, established in May 2026, says it will continue reviewing records from counties across the state and plans to release additional findings as more data becomes available.

Election officials, lawmakers, and advocacy groups are expected to closely monitor the developments as debates over voter registration safeguards and election administration continue nationwide.
