Eight students were safely rescued after becoming trapped for several hours on a rollercoaster ride that stalled around 100 feet above the ground at a popular amusement park in Galveston, Texas.
The incident occurred on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Iron Shark rollercoaster located at Pleasure Pier, a seaside amusement park overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. According to multiple reports, the ride came to an unexpected halt during its initial vertical ascent, leaving the passengers suspended near the top of a near-vertical drop.
The group, made up of students from two Houston schools on a field trip, were left dangling in mid-air for nearly four hours as emergency crews worked to reach them. Temperatures and direct sun exposure added to the difficult conditions while firefighters coordinated a complex rescue operation.
Dramatic rescue operation
Firefighters from the Galveston Fire Department responded quickly to the scene, evacuating the ride area and setting up a large ladder and tower equipment to reach the stranded passengers. Each student was carefully fitted with a safety harness before being lowered individually to the ground.
Officials later confirmed that the operation took several hours, with the final rider brought down shortly after 9 p.m. local time.
Despite the frightening experience, all eight passengers were rescued without injury. They were later checked by medical teams for dehydration and heat-related stress but were found to be in stable condition.
Cause of the incident
Park officials stated that the rollercoaster’s emergency stop system functioned as designed when a mechanical issue occurred during the ascent. However, the ride’s built-in evacuation lift system reportedly also experienced issues, requiring firefighters to complete the rescue manually.
A full inspection of the Iron Shark ride has been launched to determine the exact cause of the malfunction before it is allowed to reopen.
Officials respond
Galveston Fire Chief Mike Varela praised the rescue teams for their professionalism, noting that the operation required precision and calm under pressure. Park operators also emphasized that guest safety remains their top priority and said they are cooperating fully with investigators.
The Houston Independent School District, which organized the school trip, confirmed that all students, staff, and chaperones were safe and thanked emergency responders for their swift action.
