New York City, USA – July 5, 2026 — A sightseeing seaplane carrying eight people made a dramatic emergency landing in New York City’s East River on Sunday afternoon, with all passengers and crew rescued safely thanks to the rapid response of emergency services.
The Quest Kodiak 100 amphibious aircraft, carrying six passengers and two pilots, departed East Hampton Airport and was en route to Manhattan’s NY Skyport near East 23rd Street when it encountered difficulties shortly before landing.
The aircraft touched down on the East River around 12:00 p.m., north of the Williamsburg Bridge, where rough water conditions reportedly contributed to a hard impact with the river’s surface.
Swift Rescue Operation
Emergency responders from the FDNY Marine Division and the NYPD Harbor Unit arrived within minutes, pulling all eight occupants from the aircraft safely.
Officials confirmed that everyone survived the incident, with only minor injuries reported. At least two individuals received medical evaluations but declined further treatment.
The successful rescue has been widely praised as another example of New York City’s highly coordinated emergency response capabilities.
Aircraft Sustains Damage
Following the hard landing, one of the aircraft’s wing struts snapped, causing part of a wing and one of the floats to partially submerge in the river.
The damaged seaplane was later secured and towed to a nearby dock for inspection as investigators began examining the aircraft.
FAA Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
While no official cause has been determined, preliminary reports indicate that rough water conditions may have played a role in the hard landing. Authorities are expected to review weather conditions, aircraft maintenance records, and pilot communications as part of the investigation.
Passenger Videos Go Viral
Videos recorded by passengers inside the aircraft, including footage captured by a 16-year-old passenger, have circulated widely across social media. The clips show the tense moments following the impact and the calm evacuation as rescue boats approached the aircraft.
Body-camera footage released by first responders has also highlighted the speed and professionalism of the rescue operation.
Comparisons to the “Miracle on the Hudson”
The incident has drawn comparisons to the famous 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson,” when U.S. Airways Flight 1549 successfully landed on the Hudson River after striking a flock of birds.
Although Sunday’s event involved a much smaller aircraft and occurred under different circumstances, many observers praised the quick thinking of both the flight crew and emergency responders for ensuring everyone made it out safely.
As investigators continue to determine exactly what led to the hard landing, officials have commended the coordinated efforts of New York’s marine rescue teams, whose rapid response helped prevent the incident from becoming a tragedy.
WWM Watch World Media will continue to monitor updates from the FAA and local authorities as the investigation progresses.
