Chicago, Illinois – July 4, 2026 — A Delta Air Lines flight carrying dozens of passengers safely landed at Chicago Midway International Airport after being struck by a firework during its final approach on Independence Day, prompting a federal investigation into the unusual incident.
Delta Flight 1076, an Airbus A319 traveling from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Chicago Midway, was descending toward the runway when the flight crew reported hearing a loud “bang” shortly before landing.
Despite the impact, the aircraft landed safely at approximately 8:38 p.m. local time, and all 52 passengers and six crew members arrived without injuries.
Aircraft Removed for Inspection
Following the landing, Delta confirmed that the aircraft had made contact with a firework during its descent. The plane taxied normally to the gate before being removed from service for a detailed inspection by maintenance crews.
Preliminary reports indicate the aircraft sustained minor exterior paint damage, with no evidence of significant structural damage. The airline said safety remained its top priority throughout the incident.
Air Traffic Control Describes “War Zone”
Audio from air traffic control captured controllers discussing the intense volume of fireworks surrounding the airport during Fourth of July celebrations.
One controller reportedly described the surrounding area as a “war zone,” reflecting the widespread fireworks activity visible around the airport as aircraft continued arriving throughout the evening.
No emergency was declared, and the flight crew completed the landing without further complications.
FAA Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether the firework originated from an area near the aircraft’s flight path.
While fireworks striking commercial aircraft are extremely rare, aviation experts note that unauthorized fireworks near airports can pose serious hazards to aircraft operating at low altitudes during takeoff and landing.
Aviation Safety Reminder
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of observing local regulations regarding fireworks, particularly near airports and established flight paths during major holidays.
Although the outcome was positive with no injuries reported, authorities continue to emphasize that fireworks can present significant risks to aviation safety when used irresponsibly.
WWM Watch World Media will continue to monitor updates from the FAA and Delta Air Lines as the investigation progresses.
