Johor Bahru, Malaysia – June 19, 2026 — Authorities in Malaysia are investigating a dramatic pre-dawn arson attack that destroyed a newly opened nasi kandar restaurant in Bandar Dato’ Onn, Johor Bahru, after masked suspects were captured on surveillance cameras setting the premises on fire.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:34 a.m., just hours before the restaurant was scheduled to officially welcome customers with a planned free meal promotion. CCTV footage shows two individuals wearing motorcycle helmets entering the property before splashing what investigators believe was a flammable liquid mixed with red paint across the entrance and interior.
Moments later, the suspects ignited the accelerant, triggering a fast-moving blaze that rapidly engulfed parts of the restaurant.
Arson Attempt Takes Unexpected Turn
One of the most widely shared moments from the surveillance footage shows one of the alleged arsonists accidentally catching fire during the attack. As flames spread, the suspect’s legs became engulfed, forcing him to flee the scene while still on fire.
The dramatic footage has since gone viral across social media, drawing widespread attention to the failed arson attempt.
Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
Major Financial Loss
Police estimate the fire caused approximately RM200,000 (around US$45,000) in damage, leaving the restaurant heavily damaged before it had the opportunity to begin operations.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the building was unoccupied at the time of the attack.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are investigating the case under Section 436 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which covers mischief by fire or explosive substances. Investigators have not yet established a motive, although speculation has circulated that the attack may have been linked to business rivalry or jealousy surrounding the restaurant’s highly anticipated opening.
Police have stressed that no motive has been confirmed, and the investigation remains active.
The suspects remain at large, and officers are appealing to members of the public with information or additional footage to come forward.
Community Reaction
The attack has sparked outrage across Malaysia, with many expressing sympathy for the restaurant owners who had invested heavily in preparing for their grand opening. While the viral footage of the fleeing suspect has generated significant online discussion, many have also emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the devastating impact on the business owners.
Authorities say they remain committed to identifying those responsible and bringing them before the courts.
