Pasco County, Florida – June 2026 — A quick-thinking off-duty U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer is being praised after rescuing a 6-year-old boy from a near-tragic drowning incident at a community pool in Pasco County.
Officer Gregory Simmonds was at the pool on May 16 when he noticed the child floating unconscious in the water. Without hesitation, Simmonds jumped in fully clothed and pulled the boy from the pool.
After bringing the child to safety, Simmonds immediately began performing CPR. His efforts continued until the boy regained consciousness and emergency responders arrived. Authorities say the child is expected to make a full recovery.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) praised Simmonds’ actions, describing his response as an example of courage, quick decision-making, and selflessness under pressure.
Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Corporal J. Leathers also commended the officer’s actions, saying the rescue demonstrated extraordinary bravery and commitment to protecting others.
Surveillance footage from the pool captured the dramatic moments as Simmonds rushed to the child, removed him from the water, and began life-saving treatment while bystanders looked on.
Speaking about the rescue, Simmonds said he reacted instinctively and was grateful the child survived.
The incident has renewed attention on the importance of pool safety, supervision, and awareness around water hazards, especially involving young children.
The community continues to recognize Officer Simmonds for stepping forward when every second mattered.
