Santa Cruz, California – June 2026 — A tragic coastal accident has claimed the lives of two young women from Fremont after they were swept into the ocean by dangerous surf conditions at Panther Beach in Santa Cruz County.

The victims were identified as Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20. Authorities said the women were believed to have been resting near the “Keyhole,” a natural rock formation connecting Panther Beach and Yellow Bank Beach, when rapidly rising tides and powerful waves pulled them into the water.

The incident occurred during a period of hazardous ocean conditions, with a strong south swell creating dangerous currents, sneaker waves, and unpredictable surf along the Central California coastline.

Rescue Effort

Emergency crews responded quickly after reports of people being swept into the ocean. Eight rescue swimmers entered the water in an attempt to reach the women.

One victim was brought ashore near Yellow Bank Beach, while the second was recovered near Panther Beach and transported using emergency rescue equipment. Both received life-saving medical efforts before being taken to nearby hospitals.

Despite the efforts of rescuers and medical teams, both women later died from their injuries.

Officials Warn of Hidden Coastal Dangers

Fire officials said the Keyhole area is especially dangerous because incoming tides can rapidly cover the passage and create hazardous conditions for visitors.

Authorities warned that beaches with dramatic scenery and easy access can still present serious risks, particularly during high surf events.

Visitors are urged to:

  • Check tide charts and surf conditions before visiting.
  • Stay away from low-lying areas near cliffs and rock formations.
  • Never turn their back on the ocean.
  • Avoid resting or sleeping close to the shoreline.

Community Remembers the Victims

Friends and community members have shared tributes remembering Nair and Sran, describing the tragedy as a devastating loss.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable power of the ocean and the importance of coastal safety awareness.
