PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA — A 30-year-old Port Charlotte man has been arrested following allegations that he posted a direct death threat against U.S. Representative on the social media platform X, shortly after former President endorsed Donalds in the upcoming Florida gubernatorial race.

Authorities identified the suspect as Dominic M. Ambrosia, who now faces felony charges including intimidation by written or electronic threat to kill or injure, as well as failure of a convicted felon to register. Court records and sheriff’s office reports confirm he was taken into custody on May 27, 2026, and remains held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.

Alleged Online Threat Triggers Multi-Agency Response

Investigators say the incident occurred on May 26, 2026, after Ambrosia responded to a post shared by Rep. Donalds featuring Trump’s endorsement of his 2026 gubernatorial campaign.

According to authorities, Ambrosia allegedly wrote: “I’m going to kill him! Thanks Mr. President.”

The post was flagged and escalated to U.S. Capitol Police, who coordinated with the Pinellas County Threat Management Unit and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators later confirmed that the social media account was linked to Ambrosia through platform records provided by X, including associated contact information.

Officials also reported that additional posts on the account raised further concern, including racial slurs and disturbing and incoherent statements such as claims of having “killed Jesus” and “murdered the Virgin Mary.”

Arrest in Port Charlotte

Law enforcement officers located Ambrosia living in a travel camper situated behind a residential property in Port Charlotte. Authorities stated he consented to a search of the trailer prior to his arrest.

Officials noted that Ambrosia has a prior criminal history, including a 2025 aggravated stalking case in Pinellas County involving threats toward a neighbor and damage to property. He had been released from custody in April 2026 after serving approximately 300 days in jail.

Court documents further indicate that during prior detention he refused psychiatric medication and did not acknowledge any mental health condition, despite earlier evaluations being suspended during incarceration.

Political Context

Rep. Byron Donalds, a Republican representing Florida’s 19th Congressional District, is currently a leading candidate in the 2026 Florida gubernatorial race. His campaign has received a high-profile endorsement from former President Donald Trump and has drawn significant national attention ahead of the Republican primary scheduled for August 18, 2026.

Authorities confirmed that Donalds’ office was notified of the alleged threat, and that he has expressed a desire to pursue charges in the matter.

Investigation Ongoing

Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active as agencies continue reviewing the suspect’s online activity and prior interactions.

The case underscores growing concerns over online threats targeting public officials amid an increasingly volatile political climate surrounding major statewide and national elections.
